Essay Topics on Go Tell It On The Mountain
Essay Topics on Go Tell It On The MountainEach year, I teach a Beginner's Writing 101 class on Go Tell It On The Mountain. The essay topics I present for this lesson vary from year to year and I like to keep them fun. Some subjects require more attention than others and often, I can turn an essay into a very long and tedious job by adding lots of sentences to it.One good question is why? How can one write about themselves? My answer to this one is, how can you not.Write your essay about what you want to do, the experiences you have had and the lessons you have learned from those experiences. Now you should pause for a moment and examine what I said there. Why? Do you believe in self-creation?When you consider that when you write about yourself, you are using your imagination, you will usually include some description of the actual facts that might exist about you. For example, you might say, 'I am always making excuses to avoid a trip to the swimming pool.'You might also say, 'I make excuses to avoid the bus.' The next time you see this sentence, think about all the trips you have made since you were a little girl to the swimming pool. And then try to name the bus that you avoided. The next thing to realize is that you do not have to include any description of actual facts or even pictures of the actual facts. If you think about it, the picture, the details and the description you use do not belong together. There are many cases where I have seen students write about real facts, making descriptions of themselves and having descriptions of the real facts. What could be the lesson here? People make too many explanations when they write about their lives. If the reader's attention is drawn to a description of something, he or she has probably noticed the facts and has lost interest in the rest of the writing. So use descriptions of the real facts and get your reader's attention. Keep his or her attention with descriptions and your essay will be much more interesting.
